A fine 18th century oak cased Grandfather clock by Thomas Thorp of Colchester. The movement is an eight day that's strikes upon a bell on the hour with hour count with subsidiary second dial and date aperture signed by Thomas Thorpe Colchester.
Thomas Thorp was the orphaned son of a quaker (1717 to 1804) is recorded as working in St Runwald street Colchester from 1741 and continued to occupy the same premises until 1794 when at the age of 77 probably retired where he produced unsophisticated well made provincial clocks.
Without doubt he made quite a number of clocks during the sixty years he was in business ,but only a few have survived.
At least twelve clocks are known to have survived six in private hands and six in the author's collection of the eight day clocks there are six with square dials and two with arched dials six of these are in plan oak cases is this one.
