This is a fine 18th Century antique oak cased Grandfather clock circa 1742 by Thomas Thorp of Colchester. The movement is a 30 hr thats strikes upon a bell on the hour with hour count signed by Thos Thorp Colchester. Thomas Thorp was the orphened son of a quaker (1717 to 1804 ) is recorded as working in St Runwald street Colchester from 1741 and contued to occupy the same premises until 1794 when at the age of 77 probally retired where he produced unsophisticated well made provincial clocks. Without doubt he made quite a number of clocks during the sixty years he was in business ,but only a few have survived. At least twelve clocks are known to have survived six in private hands and six in the authors collection. A very rare clock remaining in very good condition keeping good time.
